"Drunks with Guns" Hasn't Happened

It’s been a year since the Virginia concealed carry law was changed. Since July of 2010, Virginians have been allowed to take their concealed handguns into bars and restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages. The arguments against doing so were fears about alcohol and guns leading to arguments and homicides. But the fears seem to be groundless as no CCW related shootings in these establishments have happened.

There were two shootings in the period, one outside a bar and one in a restaurant. But neither involved anyone with a concealed carry permit. In fact, the stats show that fatal violence has fallen since the law was changed.

It should be noted that to stay legal, someone with a permit can be in a bar or restaurant with their gun, but they are not allowed to drink. As long as they follow the rules, there isn’t any combination of guns and alcohol to worry about. In fact, having armed citizens around may have lowered the crime rate, at least in these types of businesses. The police report a fall of 5% in bars and restaurants since the measure was passed.

So far, it appears the pro-gun lobby had it right, or at least didn’t have it wrong. Their idea has always been to duplicate what happens when off-duty cops carry concealed firearms – the public feels safer because there’s an armed response available if trouble breaks out -- importantly, an armed response from responsible people. In the one case, it’s police officers off-duty, but in a parallel case, it might as well be responsible citizens who’ve applied for a concealed weapons permit and followed all the regulations to obtain it.
